Digital Painting - Session 7

The selection of images below were created on Friday 7th December 2012 during a photoshop tutorial session, where we used three images placed on top of each other.

1. Overlaid Images
After selecting the images and placing them on top of each other, we experimented with several overlaying techniques, which resulted in the image above.

2. Block Image
We soon began to place blocks of colour over the created image, giving the illusion of objects.

3. Detailed Image
With the emergence of object illusions, we started to place detail on the image enhancing the illusion.

4. Final Image
Recognizing possible objects in the images above, I flipped the canvas, which soon gave me ideas as to the purpose of the image, appearing in the form of a visual space.

Digital Painting - Session 6

The series of images (below) were created during an Adobe Photoshop tutorial session on 30/11/2012. We had to create several images using a template divided into three sections, with individual images.

 1. Green Mountains, Cliff Edge and Ocean Surface

 2. Sky, Plants and Underground

 3. City, Sand Dunes and Ocean Depths

4. Sand Dunes
The final image, #4, is an improved image from one of the sections of a previous image, number #3.

Concept Painting - Secret Lair

The images collection below demonstrate the process used to create the final concept painting for the secret lair of the Solar Goddess, which is located at the sun's core.

 1. Outline Image
In order to achieve the correct object placement of the image and accurate perspective, I created a simple line drawing to highlight where the objects will go and how it would look.

 2. Block Image
Once the outline was complete, I began to add colour to the image.

 3. Glass Effect
As the image is an external view of the lair, I chose to design the lair to be created from glass, in order to see the interior objects, forcing me to attempt to create a glass effect for the lair.

 4. Opacity and Texture
Along with the glass appearance, I altered the opacity of the fiery central sphere layer, in an attempt to produce a reflective appearance on the glass effect.

 5. Sculptures and Fire Effect
Creating the sculptures in a previous concept painting, I copied the images, rescaling them and placing them in the correct locations of the lair, before manipulating the background, using the smudge tool, to create a spiked fiery effect to imply the external surface of the sun.

 6. Glow and Texture
Seeing as the character is a Solar Goddess, I felt that there should be an emitting glow from her glass lair to represent the solar powers, focusing on the reflective surfaces and the glass central sphere. Based on the five elements of feng shui, I chose to place several representative textures on the rotating bands around the central sphere.

7. Final Concept Painting
To finish the final concept painting, I placed beams of light emitting from the sculpture located in the middle of the central sphere.

Concept Painting - Secret Lair

The collection of images below demonstrate the process used to create the secret lair concept painting for the solar goddess, highlighting the various techniques combined together to construct the final concept, image #6.

 1.
To begin the digital concept painting, I first sketched the basic shapes of the items within the image, a series of five sculptures, and the cylindrical shape of the room they are located in.
 2.
Once the initial rounded wall was in place, I focused on creating the fiery exterior of the lairs location, at the centre of the Sun, and transforming the cylindrical perspective into a spherical appearance, curving the struts of the glass ceiling to create the perspective.
 3.
I soon ground in some basic colours, signifying each statues' elemental goddess, at this point, focusing more on the central sculpture's detail, as it is the representation of the solar (or fire) goddess.
 4.
Completing the initial shapes of the sculptures, blocking in the colours, I soon focused on sketching the details of the object, placing a ball of fire at the base of the central sculpture and the textured appearances of the other sculptures, to signify their individual elements.
 5.
Finishing the details of the mid ground sculptures, my focus changed to the qualities of the structure of the room, focusing on creating a depth to the image, and completing the sculptures that are present in the foreground.
6.
Once the glow effect had been added, my attention was diverted to the casting of shadows, the emitting of light and the reflective surfaces of the entire room, resulting in the final completed image (#6).

Concept Painting - Hero Prop

The images below demonstrate the process used in order to create the final concept painting of the character's hero prop, the magical amulet that  provides the Solar Goddess with her power.

 1.
To begin the painting, I drew the design in the objects simplest form, to gain an idea of it's appearance.
 2.
As I found the layout rather simple and boring, I decided to change it placing the hand of the Chief God holding the amulet, as he passes it to the Solar Goddess. I then began to paint over the original image, on another layer, to create a basis for the detail to be applied to.
 3.
Image #3 depicts the amulet fully painted with basic details, in preparation to apply more specific detail.
 4.
With the amulet completed, I soon began to focus on the details of the hand, using the same technique as the amulet, filling in the outlines with colour before adding detail.
5.
In order to finish the piece, above, I added a light effect, that is emitted from the amulet due to its power, and a simple gradient to the background.

6.
As the glow of the amulet was too sharp, I used a Gaussian blur effect, also changing the opacity, to create more of a glow effect.

Digital Thumbnail Sketches - 3 & 4

These images (below) are a pair of digital thumbnails of my character's secret lair at the core of the sun. The first image is of the interior of one of the rooms, with large glass windows and the placement of a hero prop design, a hovvering fire globe of the Earth, where the goddess can witness her effects and influences on the Earth. The second images the exterior appearance of the lair, surrounded by the gases of the sun.

Digital Painting - Session 3

The below images are of digital paintings that I have improved, except for images #3 which i created from scratch, during the latest photoshop tutorial.

The first two images (incomplete) have been inspired by the book excerpts from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
