Secret Lair - Modelling - Exterior
The collection of images (below) are a series of screenshots clearly highlighting the development of the secret lair during the 3D modelling process.
1. Sun Exterior.
To create the spike effect of the model, I selected the individual vertexes of the sphere and dragged them away from the sphere, but this resulted in a bulging effect. As this was not the desired appearance, to overcome the effect I selected the faces of the bulges and used the cut faces tool before extending the points and rescaling the bases of the spikes.
2. Secret Lair.
Once the sun exterior was complete, I focused on the structure of the lair, which consists of a central glass sphere and several gigantic rings than spin round the lair.
3. Central Sphere.
Seeing as the default shader is utterly non-transparent, I placed a temporary Lambert shader on the central sphere, altering the transparency so that the interior would become visible.
4. Secret Lair.
5. Secret Lair.
Once the modelling of the lair exterior was completed, I setup a camera, ready for the final rendered of the image.

Orthographic Images
The series of images below are orthographic drawings to aid in creating a 3 dimensional digital set for a Solar Goddess. The images are orthographic images for the exterior of the lair, the hero prop, and several sculptures that are to feature in the lair.

Concept Painting - Secret Lair
The images collection below demonstrate the process used to create the final concept painting for the secret lair of the Solar Goddess, which is located at the sun's core.
1. Outline Image
In order to achieve the correct object placement of the image and accurate perspective, I created a simple line drawing to highlight where the objects will go and how it would look.
2. Block Image
Once the outline was complete, I began to add colour to the image.

3. Glass Effect
As the image is an external view of the lair, I chose to design the lair to be created from glass, in order to see the interior objects, forcing me to attempt to create a glass effect for the lair.

4. Opacity and Texture
Along with the glass appearance, I altered the opacity of the fiery central sphere layer, in an attempt to produce a reflective appearance on the glass effect.

5. Sculptures and Fire Effect
Creating the sculptures in a previous concept painting, I copied the images, rescaling them and placing them in the correct locations of the lair, before manipulating the background, using the smudge tool, to create a spiked fiery effect to imply the external surface of the sun.

6. Glow and Texture
Seeing as the character is a Solar Goddess, I felt that there should be an emitting glow from her glass lair to represent the solar powers, focusing on the reflective surfaces and the glass central sphere. Based on the five elements of feng shui, I chose to place several representative textures on the rotating bands around the central sphere.

7. Final Concept Painting
To finish the final concept painting, I placed beams of light emitting from the sculpture located in the middle of the central sphere.

Thumbnail Sketches - 40-50
The collection of thumbnails, below, are the resulting images, from the combination of the sculptural design with the spherical layout of the liar, in an attempt to merge the sculptures with their surroundings.
In image #41, the inspiration for the imagery derived from the sculptural figureheads of medieval to middle age warships, which are constructed into the front of the ships.
Resorting back to the influences from orreries, images #43 & #44, were an attempt at highlighting the deity connotations of the relating characters, by constructing gigantic statues surrounding the central glass sphere structure.
The resurrection of the orrery influences also greatly inspired images #47 - #50.
